THE FINISHING NOTEBOOK
Give your project enough room
Choose a surface around the piece you are finishing.
Start with the finished dimensions
Measure the target shape from your pattern, rather than relying on a tool’s outside dimensions. Check the usable area and space needed to position pins or pegs.
Repeated squares or a larger piece?
A grid board may be useful for repeated motifs. A larger pin-compatible surface may suit projects that do not fit a fixed grid. Exact tool compatibility must be checked before purchase.
Check moisture and storage instructions
Verify what the surface is made from, how it should be used around moisture, and whether pins or pegs are included. For pins, verify the metal and wet-use suitability rather than assuming every metal pin is suitable.
